Walks in Tarra-Bulga National Park

Located in the Strzelecki Ranges of southeastern Victoria, Tarra Bulga National Park is a popular destination that protects one of the state's only four significant areas of cool temperate rainforests, and some of the finest examples of them. The park is relatively small, but it contains mature and regenerating forests, including lush fern gullies, giant tree ferns, ancient myrtle beeches, southern sassafras, austral mulberry, and banyallas. Visitors can explore the park's two magnificent waterfalls, Tarra and Cyathea, and discover remnant stands of giant mountain ash, messmates, and blackwoods in the wet sclerophyll forests on the hills and slopes. It is hard to believe that less than a century ago, most of South Gippsland was one great forest. However, mountain ash forests, which require seed regeneration after a fire, produce even-aged, similarly-sized trees, making their recovery slow.
